Description
OutcomesThe main objective of the WALKER project is to develop a software-based demonstrator that assists in the design of very high bit rate wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) links that employ optical amplification and dispersion management.
Linear and nonlinear, intra- and inter-channel limitations imposed by transmission along the optical fibre are taken into by the demonstrator and a systemic approach to the design of WDM links is pursued.
The software will be developed in MATLAB and the demonstrator will use a user-friendly window design to communicate with the user.
A report by the end of the project will be delivered. This report will present the main features (limitations that are taken into account) of the demonstrator and describe how those limitations are modelled. Furthermore, it will include a guidebook that helps using the demonstrator.Manpower
The demonstrator will address high bit rates up to 10 Gbit/s and terrestrial links with up to several hundreds of kilometres, and takes into account the main impairments due to fibre transmission at those bit rates. Starting from the beginning and end locations of the link and from the possible locations of the repeaters, the demonstrator will consider the configurations of the link with better performance and indicate the main limitations of each configuration.
The demonstrator takes into account the following impairments on the WDM link design: amplified spontaneous emission noise of erbium-doped fibre amplifiers, group velocity dispersion, self-phase modulation, cross-phase modulation, four-wave mixing, and stimulated Raman scattering. It uses the standard quality of service requirements defined in terms of bit error ratio and Q-factor.
