Project's description
The undertaken work was concerned with the performance analysis of dense
WDM (DWDM) systems and all-optical transport networks with optical dispersion
compensation (ODC).
The objectives and contributions of the project were:
- development of analytical formulation for performance evaluation
of arbitrary optical filters;
- performance evaluation of various coding formats for DWDM systems
which allows to assess the advantages / drawbacks of using those coding formats
in DWDM systems;
- performance evaluation of several ODC strategies in dispersion
supported transmission (DST) and conventional systems and assessment of limitations
imposed by polarisation mode dispersion on the performance of DST DWDM/ODC
systems;
- generalisation of analytical formulation for the assessment of
cross-phase modulation influence on the DWDM/ODC system performance;
- assessment of limitations imposed by fibre transmission and nodes
on the size and design of DWDM/ODC networks, using the rigorous formulation
developed in topics 1) and 4).
